Objective 1: Sustainability - a sustainable fishery
in the Marlborough Sounds that will meet the cultural, economic and social needs of
present and future generations
This goal is to align with MFish
strategies for sustainability of fish stocks through quota management and regulation.
A fisheries management plan that recognises and incorporates the aspirations of the
Marlborough Sounds community
The stock management and harvest strategies will actively contribute to
the future sustainability of Marlborough Sounds resources
Consultation
Community discussion and dialogue will take place about the draft fisheries management
plan and wider fisheries management issues to identify the needs and aspirations of the
community. This feedback will be incorporated into the draft plan.
Representation
Encourage interested individuals and agency representatives to participate in the
Fisheries Plan process through membership and interaction with SoundFish.
Communication and Relationship Management Plans
A communication and relationship management plan will be developed and incorporated into
this fisheries management plan.
Blue Cod
The Blue Cod fishery has been identified as having priority for protection and
enhancement. There has been a considerable amount of research come out on the biology of
the Blue Cod in the Marlborough Sounds. The priority will be its:
1. Assess the research carried out to date.
2. Identify and fill any gaps in the research.
3. Based on this research consider management strategies.
Objective 2: Management - the fisheries management plan
will be based on knowledge and research.
This goal is aligned with Ministry
of Fisheries strategies for sustainable fisheries and Commercial Sector Management plans
i.e. CRAMAC and PAUAMAC
The fisheries management plan will be based upon the best experience and research
information available
The fisheries management plan will be implemented by a well regarded
and respected community based organisation that will be accountable to both the Minister
of Fisheries and the Marlborough Sounds community
Literature Review
Commission a literature review of available research for future reference
Research priorities and planning
Identify gaps in research and prioritise research needs. Create a draft research plan.
Local Expertise
Compile a database of local expertise in specific areas for use into the future.
Draft Management Plan
Draft, consult and approve a business and management plan for SoundFish.
OBJECTIVE 3: Community Ownership -community knowledge
and ownership of the Marlborough Sounds fishery applying principles of Kaitiaki and
stewardship.
This goal is aligned with MFish and
other groups strategic plans
The Marlborough, Nelson and wider communities will work together to address the issues
facing the Marlborough Sounds.
The fisheries management plan will recognise the diverse history of the
Marlborough Sounds and the ongoing connection of the whanau/families to that place and the
business and activity of fishing.
Indentify and consult with stake holders:
Residents
Te Tao Iho Iwi
Recreational fishers both within and out of region
Commercial fishing sectors
Other resource users i.e aquaculture
Charter boat operators
OBJECTIVE 4: Ecosystem Protection -to support
initiatives that promote a healthy marine ecosystem.
A fisheries management plan and community organisation that demonstrates a balance between
sustainable use and the conservation, enhancement, and restoration of fisheries and their
habitat in the Marlborough Sounds.
Short, medium and long term initiatives are clearly identified and
implemented to conserve, enhance and restore a healthy marine ecosystem.
Ultimately the fisheries management plan will be recognised with
Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan to achieve overall integrated management of
the Terrestrial and Marine resource.
